The winners and runners up for the Animex Student Animation Awards were announced at Animex Talk! by Shelley Page, European Representative for Feature Animation DreamWorks, David Sproxton, Aardman Animation and Philip Hunt, Studio AKA.

In our third full international year it is very encouraging to see the involvement of yet more educational establishments that, like the University of Teesside, are dedicated to exploring the many and varied uses of the animated medium. From visual effects to architectural visualisation, computer games art to 3d computer animation, pre selection week this year revealed moments of genius that I am sure will go on to inspire producers and directors working in established studios all over the world.

'Levels' by Massey University College of Creative Arts student Tom Mountfort tells of a story of a girl who travels through a variety of environments like the levels of a computer game. Every door to the next level is different to the previous and normal rules or reality don't apply. It is imaginative, controlled, colourful and like a lot of other entries in this year's Animex Student Animation Awards explores the convergence that is currently taking place in the computer animation and computer games industry.

If you think you have what it takes to contribute to this convergence, then send us your work to arrive no later than 1 October 2006. We've known for a while now that the narratives familiar to the feature film industry are common in the games industry, and vice-a-versa, however, the time has come to recognise and reward emerging stars in this new and exciting field!
