About The Iakov Chernikhov International Foundation
The beginnings of the Iakov Chernikhov International Foundation (ICIF) date from a 10-day Mediterranean competition-cruise in June 1988 on board the Soviet liner «Leo Tolstoy». Entitled «The Space of Civilization in the ÕÕI Century», this event was organized by the International Academy of Architecture (IAA) and the International Forum of Young Architects (IFYA) with the support of the USSR Union of the Architects. The main prizes of the competition, which included 300 young architects from 35 countries, were four books of Iakov Chernikhov's architectural fantasies, presented from the personal archives of the architect Andrey Chernikhov, director of the IFYA program.

In1989 Andrey Chernikhov, with the assistance of architecture professor Catherine Cooke (Cambridge, UK), offered at the Sotheby's "Russian avant-garde" auction six of Iakov Chernikhov's architectural fantasies. This charity donation served as the financial basis for organizing the Iakov Chernikhov Foundation.

The International Architectural Foundation named after the Soviet architect, graphic artist and pedagogue Iakov Chernikhov (1889-1951) - the first such charitable architecture foundation in Russia - was instituted in 1991 at the initiative of the IFYA (President - Marcos Bargilli, Cyprus; General secretary - Georgi Stanishev, Bulgaria) and the IAA (President - Georgi Stoilov, Bulgaria) with the support of the USSR Union of the Architects (President - Yury Platonov). Subsequent foundation sponsors included the German Museum of Architecture (Frankfurt-on-Main), the airline «Deutsche Lufthansa», and the architectural school of the University of Michigan (USA). National centers of the ICIF opened in Bulgaria, the USA and Russia.

Foundation donors include: Andrey Chernikhov, Helen Stamo, and Marina Chernikhova (Moscow, Russia); Helen Chernikhova (St.Petersburg, Russia); Yulia Chernikhova (Pavlograd, Ukraine); Zinaida Grek (Cologne, Germany); Leonid Lamm (New York, USA).

The ICIF defined the following basic directions: the support of experimental, educational and research works in the field of innovative architecture and town planning; the encouragement of innovative architectural concepts and initiatives by young architects throughout the world; the organization and conducting of architectural competitions and exhibitions of Iakov Chernikhov and Russian avantgarde; and the support of the children's architectural creative work in Russia.

The first significant event of the ICIF was the preparation of a traveling international exhibit «Iakov Chernikhov's Architectural Fantasies», which included over 750 originals of Iakov Chernikhov's works from collections at the Central State Archives of Literature and Art of the USSR and from Andrey Chernikhov's personal archives. The exhibit was displayed at the Bienniale «Interarch-89» in Sofia (Bulgaria) with participation of the IFYA and the USSR Union of the Architects, with the patronage of the IAA. Afterwards it was displayed at the German Architectural Museum in Frankfurt-on-Main.

In the five years after 1991 - when management of the exhibition was transferred to the ICIF - Iakov Chernikhov's works were exhibited in Strasbourg (Parliament Hall), New York (Columbia University), Copenhagen (the Louisiana Museum), Rotterdam (Gallery of Arts), Chicago (the Graham Foundation), Athens (the Municipal Gallery of Arts and Architecture), Buenos Aires (at the International Architectural Bienniale-1991), St.Petersburg (the State Russian Museum), and Moscow (the Manege Central Exhibition Hall and the State Tretyakov Gallery). The airline Lufthansa was the general sponsor of the exhibition.

From 1991-97 the ICIF, together with IFYA, conducted at the international Bienniale «Interarch» an exhibit competition entitled «20 young architects of the world». The awards consisted of: the Iakov Chernikhov prize ($1,000) and ICIF diplomas for the best conceptual architectural projects. The prize winners included:

Siegrun Reuter and Paul Werr (Germany), Yury Avvakumov (USSR), Horche Gonzales Claveran (Mexico) and Leonid Pokras (Bulgaria), Kai Wartiainen (Finland), and Lars Spuybroek (the Netherlands).

In 1993-1994 the ICIF and the Nautilus Foundation of the School of Architecture at the University of Florida (Tallahassee) organized and conducted a student competition entitled «Architectural fantasy in three-dimensional expression». The contest winners were Michael Beck (Austria), Raffi Tomasian (Bulgaria), Judith Parisse (France) and Karin Zeitlhuber (Austria).
